03 / HELP BEYOND MONEY

YOU CAN GIVE
MORE THAN MONEY.

Start with work an organization or community has asked for. Agree on what you can offer, prepare for the role, and follow through on the commitment.

TIME / IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Volunteer close to home

Ask local relief groups, community kitchens or refugee-support organizations about open roles. Commit to a regular shift that fits your availability and complete the required training.

Your first step

Find your local Red Cross or Red Crescent Society through the IFRC. Ask about actual vacancies, age requirements, training and the time expected.

Availability depends on the local society. Join through an established organization before taking on relief work.

SKILLS / FROM WHERE YOU ARE

Offer skills remotely

Translation, design, research, technology and communications can support a specific task. Choose work that matches your skills and ask for a clear brief, deadline and contact person.

Your first step

Explore UN Volunteers’ online service and read an assignment’s requirements. Apply when you can complete the work; selection is handled by the requesting organization.

Explore online volunteering (opens in a new tab)

Online volunteering is unpaid and requires applicants to be at least 18. Roles have their own eligibility and time commitments.

VOICE / MEDIA & INFORMATION

Share information people can use

Amplify affected people and local reporting with context. Share verified needs, operational updates and official ways to help so others can make informed choices.

Before you post
  • Check the original source, date and location.
  • Compare local, regional and other independent reporting.
  • Respect consent and avoid exposing private details.
  • Explain a useful action; correct errors openly.

If you cannot verify a claim, say what is uncertain before sharing it. Graphic images are not required to explain a need.

COMMUNITY / COLLECTIVE ACTION

Help an existing effort go further

Support a community-led event, an organization’s outreach campaign or a specific request for supplies. Offer practical help, organize a conversation or contact a representative about a documented humanitarian need.

Your first step

Ask a group you trust what it needs most and choose one task. For goods, confirm the requested items, quantities and delivery arrangements before collecting anything.

Find an organization to contact

Use the group’s published channels. If organizing a fundraiser, agree on the beneficiary and how contributions will reach it.

FOLLOW THROUGH

Agree on the task. Do the work. Check what helped.

Tell the organization what you can offer and when. Complete the training or brief, keep your commitment, and ask how the contribution was useful. Adjust the next step with the people doing the work.

About these routes and guidance

IFRC and UN Volunteers provide the volunteering routes linked above. Check current requirements and the individual role before applying. These are starting points, not guaranteed vacancies or a placement service.
